How Nuheara IQbuds BOOST Work & How to Set Them Up (Step-by-Step)

Nuheara IQbuds Boost earbuds

Bluetooth and wireless headphone technologies have steadily improved in recent years, as connectivity issues are ironed out. Wireless headphones often prioritize these connectivity features over enhanced audio performance and personalization options.

But why be limited to having enhanced, hearing device-level audio performance or convenient, wireless headphones when you could have both?

The IQbuds BOOST earbuds perform nearly as well as traditional hearing devices, helping those with mild to moderate hearing loss as well as enhancing hearing and blocking out background sounds for people that just want a better listening experience. These smart earbuds function as an audio enhancer, noise-canceller, and full on audio manager. Better still, the IQbuds BOOST price is a fraction of the cost of a traditional hearing device.

Features include a personalized hearing experience through earbud calibration unique to each listener, focused listening options that use a directional microphone to enhance conversations, and world equalizing technology that lets you balance the ambient noise around you.

For a hearing experience that borders on traditional hearing device-quality performance and lets you fully control the way you hear the world around you, IQbuds BOOST are ideal for you.

What’s covered in this article

Before we delve deeper into the IQbuds BOOST features, how the earbuds work, and how to set them up, let’s first look at what they are and the key differences between the IQbuds and IQbuds BOOST.

What are Nuheara IQbuds BOOST?

Nuheara IQbuds BOOST are wireless, Bluetooth-enabled earbuds that connect to a mobile device. IQbuds BOOST bridge the gap between hearing devices and headphones with a built-in auditory test, user-calibration and customization, and enhanced hearing features for individuals with mild-to-moderate hearing loss.

Nuheara IQBuds BOOST earbuds product image

The IQbuds BOOST hearing buds are true wireless earbuds that integrate seamlessly with your mobile device, television, and more via Bluetooth to help you hear everywhere you go, connected to any device. They feature hearing enhancement, product customization, and a clinically-validated ear assessment all-in-one to bring the best features from both traditional hearing devices and modern headphones.

With an intuitive, user-friendly design, the mobile app and earbuds function seamlessly together and controls are easy to use. Whether you need hearing enhancement or just want to perfect your auditory experience, the IQbuds BOOST are great for you!

What’s the difference between IQbuds & IQbuds BOOST?

The IQbuds are noise-cancelling, personalized earbuds that improve hearing ability for particular environments, such as restaurants, buses, and planes. The IQbuds BOOST have improved personalization and hearing enhancement features, including a clinically-proven audiometric test and focused hearing for conversations.

Both Nuheara earbuds have a customizable fit, improved sound for calls and music, hands free controls, true wireless performance, water and sweat resistance, world blending audio functionality, and personalized ear calibration. The IQbuds BOOST are conversation enhancing earbuds that use a directional microphone, speech and sound amplification, low latency streaming for TV, an audiometric assessment, and extreme control over managing world noise.

The IQbuds BOOST have three essential features that IQbuds do not:

1. Ear ID

Nuheara’s Ear ID is a proprietary hearing customization system that is embedded in IQbuds BOOST. This feature is simple to use, letting you measure and analyze hearing thresholds for both ears in under 10 minutes. From this, the app creates a hearing profile for you, showing the strength and weakness for picking up pitches and frequencies when hearing.

The Ear ID will take the results and automatically adjust your IQbuds BOOST settings using their clinically-validated NAL-NL2 self-fit formula. Using the Ear ID feature ensures the IQbuds BOOST hearing buds are personalized for your use, helping you get better performance and improved hearing.

Learn more about how to do the Ear ID in the Setup section of this article.

2. Focus

The Focus feature is intuitively designed and exclusive to IQbuds BOOST. It uses a directional microphone that isolates and enhances speech and sounds directly in front of you while reducing ambient background noise. This feature helps bring conversations into clearer focus, especially in crowded, noisier environments.

Working directly out of the box, a recent firmware update makes this feature even better with performance improvements. Focus can be accessed in the location preset settings for each individual location setting. You can also make the Focus feature a tap touch button, letting you easily turn it on or off with the touch of a button on the earbud.

Learn more about how to use and adjust the focus settings further on.

3. Compatibility with IQstream TV

Experiencing hearing problems can be a real issue when trying to enjoy television with friends and family. Difficulty hearing can lead to leaving the TV on extremely high volumes, which is unreasonable for those around you. Whether watching alone or with others, it can be difficult to enjoy the experience with hearing challenges.

Traditional TV hearing devices use a transmitting device near or attached to the tv. These transmit sounds from the TV via infrared light, radio waves, or wireless signals to a hearing device worn by the individual. Most of these require a device to be set up near the television, with a set service area, and they are often susceptible to interference from other devices.

IQbuds BOOST hearing buds are compatible with IQstream TV, a service that replaces traditional TV hearing devices with a more convenient, better performing experience. Your device will instantly pair with the IQstream TV system wirelessly and automatically, making setting up and use extremely easy.

Volume for the IQbuds BOOST is controlled separate from the TV, so you can adjust your personal volume without affecting those around you. Whether or not you have hearing problems, using IQbuds BOOST with your IQstream TV can create a surround sound experience and enhance your listening.

How do IQbuds BOOST work?

IQbuds BOOST earbuds product image

Nuheara IQbuds BOOST earbuds work wirelessly in your ear, automatically turning on when both are inserted. They use noise-cancelling, audio enrichment, and other hearing enhancement features. They pair via Bluetooth to a mobile application, giving the user true customization over the IQbud settings and performance.

Many features work automatically once the ear buds have been paired with your mobile device. Listen to your phone calls, phone apps, television, and more using your ear buds intuitively. After pairing, the ear buds will seamlessly work with your mobile device and can be paired with IQstream TV for a better TV listening experience.

To help you use some of the features, navigate the application more easily, and get the most out of your ear buds, we have more about how to use your IQbuds BOOST:

Navigating the mobile application: the main screen

The mobile application gives the user a range of customization options that enable them to get more out of their IQbuds BOOST hearing buds. The main screen – or “World” – screen, is simple, sleek, and easy to navigate. It tells you the current battery life of your ear buds, the current location preset being used, and the current balance of world volume.

Main screen screenshot

Adjust the world volume by tapping anywhere on the sliding scale or dragging the blue dot on the sliding scale, hearing less or more of the world around you. You can also press the World Volume graphic in the middle of the sliding scale to toggle world volume on and off.

Main screen with blue button highlighted  Main screen with world graphic highlighted  Main screen with world volume set to off

Tap the blue drop down to see all available location presets. This makes it easy to change between all available preset options – not just the ones you have favorited. You can also tap the settings button next to the blue “Location Presets” drop-down to get each preset’s unique “Settings” options. This is where you can customize the Focus, SINC, and World EQ settings for each Location Preset that you have.

Learn more about Location Presets – including how they work, how to set them up, and how to adjust the settings – further along.

You can navigate to other screens of the mobile app using the menu along the bottom, which gives you all four menu options: World, Ear ID, Tap Touch, and Info. Keep reading to learn what each menu option has to offer.

Auditory test and device calibration

Tap the Ear ID menu button to go to the Ear ID screen. If you haven’t done this before, it will walk you through how to do the Ear ID test, and calibrate the ear buds for improved, customized performance. We cover how to complete the Ear ID process a bit later.

If you have already completed the Ear ID test, tapping the Ear ID menu button will show you your results. Tap Help me understand this to see a breakdown of what the graphic represents and what it tells you about your hearing.

Once you’ve done the Ear ID, your IQbuds will adjust and calibrate to better suit your hearing profile. If the blue toggle button is on, then your IQbuds BOOST earbuds are functioning with optimized performance based on the results of your Ear ID audiometric assessment.

To turn this feature off and have your earbuds function without the Ear ID optimization, tap the blue toggle button.

You can redo the Ear ID at anytime by tapping Recreate on the “Ear ID” screen.

Adjust tap touch controls

Tap the Tap Touch menu button to change the tap touch controls on your IQbuds BOOST ear buds. This gives you more control over ear buds at a touch, without needing to access the mobile app. Customize the tap control settings here to suit the features you use the most.

Main screen with Tap Touch Menu button highlighted  Tap touch screen showing selected touch control options

Each ear has three separate touch functions, including a single tap, a double tap, and a long tap. In total, this offers six quick touch tap controls so you can use your ear buds without accessing the app. The default settings are as follows:

  • Left Tap: Play/Pause
  • Left Double-Tap: Google Assistant
  • Left Long Tap: None
  • Right Tap: World On/Off
  • Right Double-Tap: Google Assistant
  • Right Long Tap: Volume Down

All available “Tap Touch” button functionalities include: Play/Pause; Next Track, Previous Track, Volume Up, Volume Down, Google Assistant, World On/Off; World On & Pause Music; Change Location; Focus On/Off, or None.

How to change tap touch controls

From the “Tap Touch” screen, tap one of the tap touch button commands. This will bring you to the different available functions for that particular tap touch command. Tap Left Tap to change the function for the left tap touch command.

Tap touch screen showing selected touch control options  Tap touch screen with left tap button settings highlighted  Tap touch controls options left tap screen

Tap any of the empty boxes next to the available functions to set the tap touch control to execute that tap touch command. Once you’ve chosen the function you want, tap the blue “Back” arrow to return to the previous screen (“Tap Touch”).

Our example uses the “Left Tap” button command, which is the first one. Repeat these steps, replacing ‘Left Tap’ with the desired tap touch control.

PRO TIP

Set “Right Long Tap” to Change Location or Focus On/Off. For whatever reason, this is the only tap touch button that offers those commands, so you’ll have to choose between one or the other.

Change Location will quickly rotate through your favorite Location Presets. Tap and hold the right earbud with “Change Location” enabled, and it will switch to the next favorited Location Preset.

Focus On/Off will turn the Focus feature on and off. Tap and hold the right earbud with “Focus On/Off” enabled, and it will turn the focus setting on or off.

Choosing comes down to which you think will benefit you more. If you were able to tailor your Location Presets perfectly, rotating between favorites might be ideal. If you thought having to choose between either focused or 360° listening was too restrictive, having the Focus On/Off enabled might be ideal for you.

Get creative and experiment with what tap controls make using your IQbuds hearing buds easiest; you can come back and adjust these settings at any time.
