Nuheara IQbuds Boost earbuds in case

What is covered in this article

To get started, let’s quickly review what the IQbuds are and the major differences between the classic and the BOOST.

What are Nuheara IQbuds BOOST and how are they different from the classic product?

The Nuheara IQbuds BOOST are wireless, Bluetooth-enabled headphones that offer enhanced listening functionality and extreme customization to personalize the experience. With noise cancellation and audio management, personalize how you hear the world around you and get a product that performs with the quality of traditional hearing devices.

A main distinguishing feature is the level of personalization available for creating a unique hearing experience. Their Ear ID is a built in clinically-validated audiometric hearing assessment that gives you results and calibrates your earbuds to perform according to how you hear best. The Focus feature uses direction microphones that can enhance speech or surrounding noise.

If you want some more info, be sure to check out our IQbuds BOOST review, which includes the pros and cons of the earbuds, the technical specifications so you can compare performance, and real product reviews from other customers.

Now that we’ve reviewed the basics, let’s learn how to set up the earbuds.

How to set up Nuheara IQbuds BOOST

Setting up your IQbuds BOOST hearing buds is designed to be simple, accessible, and seamless, with clear instructions in the box and an app that walks you through each step of the process; you can be done in less than 10 minutes!

We’ll walk you through downloading the app, unboxing your earbuds, finishing initial setup, and completing first-time setup. We’ve even included sections on how to set up optional settings such as Ear ID calibration and how to customize location presets for personalized hearing settings, so you can get started quickly and use your product to the fullest from first use. Follow the steps below to complete set up from the moment you buy the product to continuous, regular use.

1. Download the app for Android or iOS

The first thing you can do – potentially even while you’re checking out – is download the Nuheara app to your mobile device. Get it for iOS through the Apple Store and Android through Google Play.

You can also search “Nuheara” in either app store and then tap on the IQbuds app by Nuheara Ltd. Then tap Install to download and install the app.

Open the product box and remove the tray with the charging case and ear buds. Below is the product and safety information booklet and information pamphlets, indicating how to plug your charging case and ear buds in as well as guidance on how to set up your device.

Take out the pamphlet with images and follow the instructions to place the earbuds in the charging case. The USB cord is located under the blue flap at the bottom of the box. Remove this, connect it to the charging case and connect the other end to your computer. Give the device thirty minutes to charge. If you haven’t already, return to step 1 and download the app.

If at any point during the process you are having a problem, get help from Nuheara at www.nuheara.com/setup.

3. Initial setup – pick your product and prep for setup

Now you’re ready to move forward to the next steps.

4. First time setup

The “First Time Setup” walks you through setting up your Nuheara IQbuds BOOST to ensure they are calibrated, fit comfortably, and are ready for consistent use. These are steps you have to do one time only: the first time you open the product. We’ve broken it down into a few different steps to help make it simple.

1. Insert earbuds

First, use the “L” and “R” markers on the ear buds to identify which ear they should go into. Once you know which ear each bud is meant for, tap NEXT to proceed.

Insert the IQbuds into your ears, with the ear tip facing down. You’ll notice that the earbuds turn on automatically once both have been inserted. If you remove one, they will turn off. This intuitive design makes them convenient to use, and ensures that they save battery life when they are not plugged in. Tap NEXT to proceed to the next step.

Push them in the same way you would an earplug, ensuring that they are form-fitted and create an airtight seal. This is important for them to perform properly. If you are having trouble getting an airtight seal, or they are not comfortable, remove the earbuds to make adjustments (described in the next step). Tap NEXT to proceed to the next step.

2. Pick the correct ear tips

If the earbuds are not fitting properly, you can remove them and adjust the fit by applying different sized or shaped ear tips. Try a few different sizes to find what fits most comfortably and creates an airtight seal. Make sure you adjust them to sit securely in your ear and to be comfortable while in use.

If you are having trouble changing the ear tips, tap Watch our tip changing technique to watch a brief, 5 second video showing you how to apply the ear tips to the earbuds. Tap the blue “Back” arrow in the top left corner to return to the previous screen (“First Time Setup”).

Adjust back and forth until the earbuds feel locked in, then tap NEXT to proceed.

3. Learn tap controls

Next, the device will show you where the “Touch Sensors” are located on the earbuds. There are two more steps to calibrate and fully set up your device that we suggest doing next. It doesn’t really matter which order you do them in, but you’ll need to complete the Ear ID to calibrate the device to your ears and set Location Presets for a personalized experience.

    6. How to complete the Ear ID

Although the official setup is done, we suggest completing the Ear ID as part of the setup, before you start truly using the product. You want the device to work for you, and customizing the device to ensure it’s calibrated properly is essential for getting the best out of your Nuheara IQbuds BOOST earbuds.

Make sure you’re in a quiet place alone and let’s get started.

Tap on the Ear ID menu button along the bottom of the app screen. Once opened, Tap on Get started to initiate the process. The Ear ID will take 10 minutes and will require at least 10% IQbuds battery life (so you should be able to do it shortly after getting them and once basic setup is complete).

Main screen with Ear ID menu button highlighted  Ear ID screen with Get Started button highlighted

This screen outlines the four steps that the Ear ID will include for you, so you know what you’ll be doing. It is definitely worth the 10 minutes to do the Ear ID, as it will allow you to customize your earbuds for personalized and improved performance. Now that you have an idea of the entire Ear ID process, tap NEXT to proceed.

    1. Measuring surrounding noise

Being in a quiet place alone is important for the entire Ear ID process, so that there are no sounds interrupting the calibration process. After tapping NEXT on the “What you need” screen, let the device measure the surrounding noise to determine if it is quiet enough for set up. If not, find a quieter place to pass this step so the results are accurate. Once you’ve found a quiet place, tap NEXT to proceed.

    2. Checking your ear tips

The app will now help you check that your ear tips are set up properly and that the device is sitting in your ear as it should. The device will test both ears, one at a time. It will play different tones at decreasing volumes, asking that you tap the screen as soon as you hear a tone. Tap the Start button to initiate the test and ensure that the earbuds are on correctly. After that, tap the Tap button every time you hear a tone in either ear.

Backed by science, you can trust the Ear ID to accurately test your ears and give you a true assessment of your hearing.

    7. How to use Location Presets

Now that we’ve completed initial setup, first time setup, and the Ear ID calibration process, it’s time to set up location presets to make using your device convenient and simple. Location presets let you customize hearing settings for various situations, so you can adjust your ear buds with the press of a button when your environment changes.

While you don’t have to do them during setup, we suggest doing them early to get the most out of your IQbuds earbuds.

    Set them and forget them

Location presets are customizable, preset options designed for workout, street, home, office, restaurant, driving, and plane environments. You can further customize the settings of each preset option to suit you in each type of scenario by choosing between 360° and focused listening, adjusting the SINC options to balance between world noise and speech, and manage the World EQ to balance bass and treble as you prefer. Ultimately, these features let you customize the listening experience just for you.

Access the Location Preset options available to you by tapping the blue drop down box displaying the current location preset.

This lets you easily navigate to them using the earbuds’ tap controls instead of having to open the app. A clear white heart indicates that the preset is not favorited; a filled blue heart indicates that the preset is favorited. To favorite a specific location preset, tap the clear heart icon; to unfavorite a specific location preset, tap the filled blue heart icon.

This feature allows you to simply change settings between the street, the home, or checking out at a store. Simply cycle the location presets to adjust to any situation!

    PRO TIP: Mute the world

Don’t forget that the ear buds also have a World On/Off button function, which lets you quickly mute the world around you. Functioning much like noise cancellation, this function does a great job of blocking everything out. If you ever need some quick relief and can’t – or don’t want to – find a location preset for the task, simply turn the world off.

Customize location presets for optimized performance

Next, we’ll examine how to further customize each location preset. After selecting a location preset, you can further personalize the preset when it is active. From the “World” screen, tap the settings button directly to the right of the blue location preset drop down button to customize your specific location preset.

You will be directed to the Settings screen for the location preset you have active. From there, you will be able to adjust the Focus, SINC, and World EQ of the particular Location Preset you have selected. When you enter each location preset setting screen, you will be automatically put in the Focus setting options. (Our example uses the ‘Office’ preset, but you can do this process for each individual preset option).

    360° versus focused listening

Choose between 360° or focused listening. Let everything come in and hear from all directions equally with 360° listening options. Isolate sounds in front of you in noisy environments and block out background noises. Tap the Focus toggle button or anywhere on the center wheel to switch between 360° and focused listening settings.

Use a 360° setting that lets all noise in for at home and choose a focused, controlled setting when you go out in the street, visit a restaurant, or are at your desk in the office.

    Balance ambient noises and conversation

Tap the SINC header to access the SINC settings for your current, active location preset. Use the SINC settings to control the balance between world noise and speech. Find the right balance using the wheel, allowing you to block out background noise from the world and focus on speech instead. While this setting seems similar to the main “World” screen, this setting is centered on speech. Tap anywhere on the wheel to choose that balance or tap the blue circle to drag it where you want it to go.

Tap on the SINC Level graphic in the center of the adjustable wheel to toggle the SINC function off and on.

PRO TIP: The difference between World Volume and SINC settings

It’s important to note that the SINC setting and the World Volume setting on the main screen are different settings. The main World Volume lets you control how much overall sound the device picks up, whereas the SINC setting lets you actually balance how much ambient and talking sound the device picks up.

    Equalize bass and treble

Balance the sounds of the outside world with the “World EQ,” or world equalizer. This lets you balance the bass and treble your earbuds pick up so you can adjust your devices to block out obnoxious, annoying, or otherwise burdensome noises. You can customize the World EQ for each preset, which lets you balance the bass and treble differently for unique situations.

Tap the World EQ header to access the World EQ settings for your current, active location preset. The app will prompt you with information about what this setting controls. It indicates the sliding bar used to control the World Equalizer setting. Tap anywhere on the wheel to choose that balance or tap the blue bar to drag it where you want it to go.

Adjusting the wheel to the left reduces bass (low frequencies) and adjusting the wheel to the right reduces treble (high frequencies).

You can also tap the World Equalizer graphic to turn World EQ off.

Once you have adjusted all settings for your location preset, tap the blue “Back” arrow in the top left corner of the screen to leave the “Location Preset Settings” screen and return to the previous screen (“World”).

That’s all there is to it; now your Location Preset is set up for your preferences. Continue for different presets to customize for various listening situations.

Ultimately, the variety of location presets and customization options available lets you personalize and perfect your listening experience. Fiddle with the preset options so that they suit your specific preferences; feel free to adjust them as you use them to get best results. With a variety of setting options, there are many different configuration options.
